A Look Back

I
was busy gathering firewood for the family bonfire when I got a call from my brother. “ Bru, you gotta see this!” Across town some men were plowing a field with teams of horses. He thought it would be worthy of a photograph. As usual, I didn’t have a lot of time but I grabbed a camera and headed out the door. When I got there people were lined up and down the road curiously watching the men and horses as they worked. When I finally found a place to park, I eased out of my car and with a little apprehension I approached one of the teams. People react differently to someone making a photograph of them. I always try to be thoughtful as not to offend anyone. As I stood there watching and accessing the situation, the man passed by with his horses. “ Stay right there “ he said, “ next time around I’ll get em to smile for you! ” The ice was broken and now I was sure I had a friend. I watched for a while wondering what made this so fascinating to me and all the other folks standing around. Was it the quietness? You could hardly hear a sound, just the soft hiss of the plow cutting into the earth and an occasional "heup" to encourage the horses along. Do people like seeing things done the old fashion way so much that they will stop on a busy highway on a busy Saturday and watch for hours?

I’m a photographer. I can’t say for sure that photography is my passion even though it seems like I have a thousand cameras and lenses. I can say however that people and beauty are my passion. The beauty of nature and the beauty of all people and their stories are the things that inspire me. I have an insatiable curiosity about people and things that somehow binds me to a camera. If I could paint instead, I probably would. This curiosity kept me spellbound for quite a while...just thinking.

So... why were we all fascinated? It’s hard for me to speak for the others but this is where my thoughts took me. Imagine a time when a man stood alone in a field with a team of horses plowing row after row, day after day. Think of the hours he spent in prayer for his family, his friends, and his crops. Think of the time he spent reflecting about how much he appreciated his health, his wife, and his children. There was an awful lot of time for a man to get things in the proper perspective thus giving life more meaning. Life is faster today, we can get more THINGS accomplished with tractors, computers, smart phones, and digital cameras, but is life as rich today as it was yesterday? I’m just asking.

The horse on the right was camera shy. Fact number 63... when doing group shots of animals or people at least one subject in the group will be uncooperative.

I love hands. You can tell a lot about someone by looking at their hands. I asked this gentleman if I could photograph his. When I finished he said " would you believe these are the hands of a board certified orthopedic surgeon?" His hands looked strong and yet there was a gentleness about them.
