A Go To Man

E
verybody needs a go to man, the more you have the better off you are. Wynn is one of my go to men. He's a whiz concerning technical matters... a self proclaimed "geek". He keeps my computers purring and gives me a comfort knowing that, know matter what I mess up it, it can be fixed. More than all that, he's a great friend with whom I share a lot interests. He gives good and honest advice, one of a few people that I trust completely.

I did a little photo session of his son Ashel that I believe is going to be a chip off the old block. Here are a few of my favorites.

From Snow and Ice to Somewhere Nice

I
t had been too long since Karen and I had spent time together... just the two of us. Although the trip was business for her, I was happy that I could tag along and that we could spend our evenings together. After a couple of canceled flights, we left the cold and icy state of North Carolina and made our way to Florida. Stepping off the plane we were met with sunny skies and a warm winter breeze pushing the palm trees back and forth. Florida is such a wonderful place to be... in winter. After making a trip to Starbucks for Karen to get her morning coffee, I watched her as she left, i-pad in hand, game face on, and resolved to do her best to promote her company. She's a good woman and I'm very proud of her! We had a great time as always, a couple of good dinners and long walks along the cart paths that meandered along the lake. I watched her as she did her little Karen things and I thought... of all the decisions I've made spending life with her is the best!

Why I Make Photographs ~ NC Photography

I
t's cold outside--the wind is howling and blowing snow through the trees and across the road. I know it's a perfect day to stay inside, grab a blanket, and watch a good movie but I'm restless. I can't stay in. I'm inspired. I have to go out and make photos. Inspiration is what drives me. Sometimes I find it in the beauty of nature, sometimes it's in the way two people in love look at each other, sometimes it's in the miracle of life, and sometimes it's in the weathered face of an old man. And sometimes if I am fortunate enough, the moment I capture with my camera inspires someone else.  I believe that is the greatest compliment to an artist...that their work would inspire.

Bruce Wehrle is a good friend to my family and me. He works for the Dispatch, a local newspaper. Everyone that knows Bruce has a lot of respect for him--he writes honestly and from the heart. I was honored when Bruce emailed me and said that one of my photos inspired him to write a poem, something he had not done since his days in college.

I'd like to re-post a photo from a previous blog and include Bruce's poem. I hope the beauty of his words will inspire someone else. Tell me, have you been inspired today?

North Carolina Children's Photography ~ Luke

R
ites of passage...everyone has them. And, I’m almost certain that everyone crosses those rites of passage with a wing man (wing woman). Natasha was always mine.

I met Natasha in middle school...within weeks we had already switched boyfriends (they were twins--which made the switch a lot easier). I watched my first R rated movie with Natasha--it gave me nightmares for weeks. I played my first game of spin the bottle at her house. We made prank calls together...we spied on neighborhood boys together...we cried over “major” break ups together...we played M-A-S-H together and wondered if we’d be there for each other to see if our results came true. She saw me through my first major surgery...she stood by me through some very tough times.

Her strength and consistency has always been something I admired. She is tough. She is honest. She is my best friend.

SO when I found out that we’d go through pregnancy together...I was beyond excited. We walked together...cried together...compared pregnancy notes together. I kinda hoped we’d go into labor together, but I beat her there.

Baby Luke turned one a few weeks ago. Natasha asked Dad to document Luke’s first year for her...and its amazing how much he’s grown and learned in just a year. What’s more amazing is watching her with him...and seeing how Baby Luke is being uniquely shepherded by his mommy’s strength and consistency. Keep it up Toddy...I may be blessed enough to call him my son-in-law one day :-)
