Inspired by Martha Stewart

D
own east there's a little town called Kinston. Nestled among the cotton fields is a thriving manufacturing company by the name of MasterBrand Cabinets Inc. where they make beautiful cabinetry for homes and offices worldwide AND they do it right here in the USA! Their home office is located in Jasper, Indiana. They have more than 8,000 associates at manufacturing facilities and service centers throughout the United States and Canada. MasterBrand also manufactures a line of cabinets for Martha Stewart Living Kitchens.

I was invited by MasterBrand to photograph Martha Stewart while she visited the facility in Kinston. I must say I was inspired. Inspired by the courtesy and professionalism from all the folks at MB, from top level management to the brilliant man with a contagious smile that cleans and maintains the facility. I was inspired by Martha Stewart... here's a person that has so much--as far as material things. She could be sitting on an island somewhere with someone bringing her margaritas and chips, yet she is driven to keep going--arguably more so than anyone else in the entire building. You have to wonder what makes a person like that go. I don't know the answer, but this is what I believe about her; she loves her work. She also seems to take a great deal of pride and responsibility in knowing that she is providing jobs and a future for so many people. I looked around and there were over 300 people in just one location making a living because she decides to continue working. Martha Stewart was happy and so was everyone else.

Greensboro Portrait Photography - Beth

I
love photographing people. For me, the real challenge is and has always been, capturing the true personality of who I'm photographing. Like most photographers I have at times fallen victim to over-using photoshop and certain actions to "improve" or attempt to establish a particular style. In reality, style doesn't come out of a box, it comes from your heart. Although I will continue to experiment with different techniques, I've made a promise to myself to look deeper into who I am as a photographer and study more who my subjects are ... bringing out the uniqueness in both. It's a lifelong journey, one I'm excited to be travelling!

Now, I'd like to share a few photos from our last of three sessions with Beth for her model portfolio. It's been a real joy getting to know Beth and to see the different looks that make her personality. (Thanks Karen for a great job on Beth's makeup!)

"To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."

NC Portrait Photography - Nathan

O
ne of the great things about being a photographer is all of the interesting people I get to meet. I received a call from Charlie Jones, a music minister and friend from Rich Fork Baptist Church. He told me he had been working with an outstanding young man for about five years giving him piano lessons. Charlie said that Nathan was very talented and was even composing his own music. He is in the process of making a cd and needed photos for the cover and a book of music he has written. It was fun getting to know Nathan and I can say this ... he's about as well rounded as any young man that I've ever met. Not only is he an outstanding musician, he loves sports, especially basketball. He has been working out with weights for many years, and last but not least, he's very academically gifted.

Upon graduating from High Point University he hopes to work in finance. Hey, he was picked to ring the bell on Wall Street, how about that! Finally, one of the most amazing things about him is, with all his talent, I had to get most of the information about Nathan from Charlie ... Nathan has too much humility to talk about himself!

Nathan, Karen and I wish you much success and happiness and thanks for the opportunity to get to know you.

NC Model Photography...Session 2

A
couple of weeks ago we did our first of three sessions with Beth. It's been so much fun, not only photographing her but getting to know her as a person.......things like her love for candy.... especially gummy worms, and her fascination with lipstick have made our sessions....well interesting. Beth really has a beautiful heart and it shows in the way she speaks and in the warmth she conveys.

On Monday we completed our second session with Beth. Our plans were for an outdoor session in downtown Winston but the weather was so unbearably hot we decided to take it inside and do a few head shots. Once again, Beth arrived early for Karen to do her makeup. I can't say enough about how important it is to have good makeup for a successful session, especially when using available light only.

Beauty... when you look into a woman's eyes and see what is in her heart. ~Nate Dircks
