Charlotte Wedding Photography-A Different Perspective

I
t's not often that I have the opportunity to be the second shooter at a wedding but when I do, I love it! It gives me the opportunity to take a whole different approach to the event. Weddings are a lot like a volcano ... plans and emotions bubble and rumble for weeks then on the big day they all explode leaving the unprepared scrambling to reach higher ground. As photographers we have to stand in the midst of it all, calm and collective, picking out all THE moments 1/60th of a second at a time. Being a second shooter frees me from all the "must have" shots and allows me to slowly, quietly, and deliberately seek out more meaningful photos, which is really where my strength lies as a photographer.

This past weekend I worked with three other photographers at a wedding. Three amazing photographers and three wonderful people! Between the four of us there were 15 cameras and 20 lenses. We shot with digital cameras and film cameras from 35 mm to a vintage 4x5 Speed Graphic camera. Oh yeah, not to forget 8mm movie film too! We danced around the entire wedding in perfect synchronization, never bumping in to one another or being too intrusive.

I'll be sure to keep you informed as to when and where the final compilation of photos can be seen, but as for now I would like to share with you some of mine and also share with you some of what I felt as I made these images.

The first image is of Liz as she's getting her make up. Wedding days are so busy and the bride is always at the center of all the attention, as it should be. Occasionally it's nice for her to have a little quite time to reflect and to absorb all the emotions. At this moment there were bridesmaids, photographers, and family all through the house. I wanted to get a photo that isolated her from all the hustle.

Sometimes the dads have to be thankful for any available space they can find. With all the bathrooms, mirrors, and chairs occupied the floor is often the only place.

Liz's family are strong Christians. I could sense that as soon as I entered their house. I saw a bible lying on a footstool, opened. I asked her dad had he been reading it. He told me that he had and he told me a little about what this specific Psalm meant to him as it pertained to the wedding. I felt that in the years to come looking at this image would bring back a flood of memories telling him how he felt the morning of the wedding day.

There are many great photos of the bride getting dressed. For me, it's always about the hands. I love hands, they tell such a story. I wonder how comforting these hands have been to Liz in the past?

For a brief moment, she's alone. I wonder what she's thinking?

Smelling good is as important as looking good! This is the last task before leaving for the church.

I'm back to the hands again. Michael's dad is a minister, I love to see a father pray for his son. Some day if not already Michael will realize those prayers are good for a lifetime!

For me, I found this photo to be very heartwarming. The elderly are sometimes easily forgotten. I pray that some day Karen and I will be blessed enough to see our grandchildren married!

The handsome groom being ever so attentive and willing to assist.

The wedding party after hearing the "last shot" announcement!!!

And finally... the team. From the left, Christopher Record. Kristin Vining. Richard Israel and me. Thank you my friends for a wonderful day, and God's richest blessings to Liz and Michael as they enter this new chapter of life... together.
