E very month, somewhere about the middle, I photograph each one of my babies. I've been doing it since the day Bradyn was born and plan on continuing for as long as I can. That's seventy three months for Bradyn, forty three months for Layla, eleven months for Adalei, and one month for Beckett. I never tell them to smile or ask them to pose, I let them do whatever they want to do and just interact with them. It's so interesting to go back and see how they've changed over the years.I can remember the first time I looked through the lens at Bradyn and realized that he had lost his baby look.
One of the reasons I love photography so much is because I really love people. I love to look at a face through a lens and shoot at the precise moment that that face reveals something about the person it's connected to. So often I believe that's what we've lost in the art of photography today; just looking on the surface and not trying to look to deep into something. I could ramble on and on about this but I think it would be better to leave you with a quote from arguably the greatest photographer of people that has ever lived.... "My photographs don't go below the surface. They don't go below anything. They're readings of the surface. I have great faith in surfaces. A good one is full of clues. But whenever I become absorbed in the beauty of a face, in the excellence of a single feature, I feel I've lost what's really there...been seduced by someone else's standard of beauty or by the sitters own idea of the best in him. That's usually not the best. So each sitting becomes a contest." Richard Avedon 1980 |
